 Paintings

Please Note - The images of the paintings have been slightly distorted  to combat digital theft (blurred, warped, truncated), also, hidden digital watermarks have been added to some. The paintings shown here are just a random sample. More to come soon. S. Originals of Robert (Bob) Kaplan's paintings are for sale; his pioneering "High Surface Effect" Syringeographic methods often result in paintings where originals differ greatly from prints. Prints are very limited at this time. The images here are more representative of what a print would look like than how the original appears (due to 3d features).

Missing! In an around June 18, 2008, the "Mini Coral" and "Flavor of the Moon" paintings went missing. The two paintings, along with about 6 others were "together", the "Flavor of the Moon" has been recovered but "Mini Coral" was not. The above is the only "photo" of the painting and only shows the bottom left corner. Theft is unlikely as nothing else was touched. It is possible that it rolled out of the vehicle somewhere in Edmonton, Canada in the between West Edmonton Mall and Sherwood Park. The painting was rolled into a ~2 inch tube, it is 18"x24" and clearly signed "Robert Kaplan". A significant reward is being offered ($1200, subject to availability of funds).  Reward contributions are welcome

Robert Kaplan is a Canadian artist based in Edmonton. He is known for his 'high surface effect' paintings where he has pioneered the use of unique tools to create paintings that cause a very large change in perception based on angle of view and light quality and source.  Elements in his paintings will change color depending on whether they are viewed from the right, dead on, or left. His paintings often contain numerous hidden elements (such as faces) that are only revealed by close study. His paintings have a deeper meaning than what is seen at first glance. He says his paintings have three levels of meaning, the first what you see at first, second what you see when you look closer, and third is the real theme of the painting, which is up to you to decide.  Robert is also a power engineer, internet consultant, philosopher, trainer, writer, fisherman and musician.

Long hours in the hospital gave Jasper the  idea to use a syringe in his artwork

A glob of paint shown at the tip of a medical syringe just prior to application....

The "white" globs /points of paint in the foreground are clearly white when viewed from the right side of the painting.....

As seen from the left side, the white globs of paint are a light blue, not white as show in the previous "frame". This is called "surface effect". JJ Peaks's paintings that employ this unique and original technique appear quite differently when viewed from different perspectives and under varied lighting conditions....

Douglas Vernon Northey (1953-1987) - Canadian Artist (now deceased) born in Red Deer. Artwork by Douglas Vernon Northey is NOT for sale - however, limited edition prints will be. Proceeds of the sale of these prints will go to the Doug Northey Memorial Fund. Artwork by Bob Kaplan is for sale. Prints are also for sale. 35% of the proceeds from Bob Kaplan's art sales will be directed to the Doug Northey Memorial Fund until further notice. A large percentage of Doug Northey's landscape oil and line sketch artwork DISAPPEARED after his passing. It is a great mystery. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Please contact R.J. Kaplan through this site if you have any information.
