For a typical Windows XP Installation I recommend three security measures. They are free and do not interfere with other applications (as Norton so notoriously does):

Anti-Spyware - Spybot Search and Destroy - Free for Personal Use (I recommend paying some amount if you use it alot)

 http://www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index.html

...just click on a mirror site like “safer-networking” and the download will start.

Anti-Virus - "ANTI-VIR" - Free for Personal Use (I recommend paying some amount if you use it alot)

Here is the link to download, but visit the actual website for more info -

The antivir site is at - http://www.free-av.com – if you have trouble downloading from the above “link”, go to this main site and click on the “Free” version

Firewall - Use Windows Firewall - free with operating system OR, if you have a router with a built in firewall, activate it, and deactivate Windows Firewall on all machines using the router.

Remember - DO NOT RUN MORE THAN ONE FIREWALL OR ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM - THIS IS ASKING FOR TROUBLE.

Note:   Also ensure that programs are kept up-to-date (including Legitimate Windows Installations).
